Around 100 people attended an open garden day organised by the Duddon Support Group (DSG) on 25 June. It took place at Tomsteads, near Broughton-in-Furness, at the invitation of committee member, Rachel Isherwood.
More than just a garden, Tomsteads boasts a seven-acre, mixed-habitat wildlife haven: a perfect location for a wildlife-themed event to help connect people with nature.
The day featured guided walks to identify the many insect, plant and bird species and a popular moth trap, where around 20 species were identified. Cumbria Wildlife Trust Learning and Development Manager, Jamie Normington, led popular pond-dipping sessions, which delighted children and adults alike, and shared his knowledge and enthusiasm. A well-stocked tombola stall added to the fun.
Eighty-five visitors - from toddlers to grandparents – were supported by a team of 15 DSG volunteers who helped with activities, engaged with the public and provided refreshments.
In addition to allowing people to enjoy and learn about the abundant wildlife, the event raised £740 for CWT funds.
