Smardale butterfly Transect has been recorded nearly every year since the 90’s.  This gives us a unique data set of butterfly numbers for the reserve and contributes to the overall trends for butterflies across the UK. It is especially important for one of the only population of Scotch Argus in England, which has distinctly different and important genetic makeup from other UK populations.

This is a perfect opportunity for a keen naturalist who is retired or has flexible working arrangements.

We need someone to walk the Transect once a week from April to September noting all the butterflies they see. Flexibility is essential as the weather has to be warm, sunny and relatively still to be able to do the survey.

Full training in methodology will be given and help with identification will be provided.  We will always try and find a substitute for those weeks you are away or on holiday.
