Sustainable Carlisle

Sustainable Carlisle is a network of people and projects that want to make the city more sustainable for themselves and for future generations. They part of the Zero Carbon Cumbria Partnership

This collective aims to 'create a peaceful, vibrant, resilient future based on common sense, ecological wisdom and social justice' by:

  • increasing awareness of local and global issues surrounding climate change and peak oil, and promoting the move from a profit-based economy to a people-based economy, based on the many examples of alternatives from circular economies to participatory budgeting.

  • working to find a way to transform how we organise ourselves as a society and to transition to a more equitable way of living, recognising social and climate justice. The groups wishes to inform and become more informed, educate and become more educated, engage and become more engaging, through organising our own events and participating in those organised by others.

  • helping to reducing Carlisle’s overall Greenhouse Gas emissions and dependence on Fossil Fuels through promoting behaviour change including how councils run their business and decision making.

  • working to protect and restore our local biodiversity by fighting developments and decisions that threaten it and increasing awareness of how important it is to us and our wellbeing.

  • working to develop and support local projects engaging in the community with similar aims and objectives from repair, reduce, recycle schemes to planting trees, campaigning and talking to power holders.

  • taking every reasonable step to minimise the greenhouse gas emissions resulting from the group's activities.
