Undercover area for educational visits at Foulshaw Moss Nature Reserve

Educational visits to Witherslack Wetlands

Bring your group along to one of our sessions at our three wetlands: Foulshaw Moss Nature Reserve, Meathop Moss Nature Reserve and Nichols Moss Nature Reserve. All three reserves are very different and wonderful in their own way.

You'll find some of our educational sessions that we're delivering at Witherslack Wetlands listed below. Booking is essential as our sites do get very busy and parking is very limited.  Please contact Danni via email or call 07864 589167 to book or discuss what will work best for you.

Pre School – Nature Tots sessions

On the first Tuesday morning of every month this is a nature-based play and discovery session. Each month we do something different; there may be crafts, stories, bug hunting and lots of other things. £1.50pp suggested donation

Primary School (Home Education) - Bog School

Every Tuesday afternoon 12.30pm till 4.30pm. Think Forest School, but wetter!  Bog school sessions are a chance for 4 to 11 year olds to organically learn more about nature, conservation, climate change and the world beyond our feet. £1.50pp suggested donation

Primary School

We'll adventure around the reserve and look at ospreys, bog bugs, peat, carnivorous plants, pond life and little birds.  This can be delivered as a day trip to the reserve or split up into shorter visits if you'd prefer. Suggested donation £78 (includes a year’s group membership with a further 14 hours of support)

Secondary School

Case study sessions on habitat regeneration, biodiversity, reintroduction programs, global conservation, peat bogs and climate crisis. Session links to the curriculum can be sent out beforehand. Suggested donation £78 (includes a year’s group membership with a further 14 hours of support)

College/University

Guided walk around the different wetland sites, with the chance to do some surveying and core sampling. Comparative studies of different habitats can be accommodated as there are grassland and coastal sites locally too.  Suggested donation £78 (includes a year’s group membership with a further 14 hours of support)

Young Ranger Days

Conservation volunteering for 11 to 16 year olds, we're taking on the on-site management of the wetlands in these sessions.  We could be pulling out rhododendron, planting new bog plants, fixing boardwalks or creating new features. Free to attend

John Muir Award/The Duke of Edinburgh's Award

Active Conservation sessions to meet the conservation requirement for these awards. Free to attend

Bring your class along to one of our morning or afternoon two hour sessions at our Foulshaw Moss Nature Reserve. They're on a Tuesday or Thursday during term times.

You can expect the following from an educational visit at Foulshaw Moss Nature Reserve:

  • Welcome - a quick chat with the students at the carpark area covering health and safety and how to get the most out of their time on the nature reserve.
  • Bird Hide - Find out about garden birds and how we can help them while watching the birds on the feeders.
  • Board Walk - Discussion on what is a peat bog, its depth and history.
  • Viewing Platform - What is Carbon and why a bog helps.
  • Osprey viewing Station - we'll have a talk from Mathew, one of our volunteers, telling us the history of the ospreys here, and why osprey populations are on the up. We have the chance here to view the osprey nest.
  • Ponds - we will have a short pond dipping session followed by a break for refreshments.
  • Peat Cutters board walk - Discussion on reptiles followed by an activity in the outdoor classroom area.

Or, if there's a class topic that you're working on, we're happy to focus on that through your visit too.
