Rusland Horizons Trust

Rusland Horizons Trust was established in 2019 and aims to support nature recovery and educate visitors about the beautiful but fragile landscape in the Rusland Valley.

Here's more from them:

'At the heart of our work is the conservation and natural regeneration of the special landscape that makes up the Rusland Valley and fells. Lying between Coniston Water and Windermere, the area is one of the most densely wooded in the South Lakes and contains precious fragments of temperate rainforest, better known as Atlantic Woodland, as well as ancient meadowlands.

The area also has a number of SSSI sites including a lowland raised peat bog of national significance at Hay Bridge. With fascinating, and sometimes rare, wildlife and ecosystems, the valley is a refuge for a number of red listed species.

Conservation projects include practical work parties such as dry stone walling repairs, tree, hedge and wildflower planting, coppicing and general habitat improvement including the removal of invasive species, such as rhododendron. Experienced individuals teach their skills to those volunteering so the attendees feel equipped to undertake further work to support nature recovery. Volunteers include members, the local community and visitors who are keen to give something back.

Outreach work is also core to the work of Rusland Horizons Trust. Access to the countryside for those who are disadvantaged economically is often highly restricted but is proven to improve mental health and wellbeing. Through grant funding, we give young and disadvantaged people the chance to visit and learn about the countryside, build self-confidence and, more often than not, to fall in love with nature.'

Details of all events and activities can be found on the Rusland Horizons website and Facebook page.
